Chiara Berardelli is an Italian Scottish singer-songwriter living in Glasgow, Scotland. A wonderfully talented singer/songwriter (as well as a practicing GP) her albums are available for purchase or listening to on many platforms including Spotify.
Her new album, ‘Seamonster’, released on March 2nd 2018, is her most personal project to date. Inspired by the loss of her dream of becoming a mother, the songs depict a journey, from the crashing realisation that something so longed for is permanently out of reach in the title track to the tentative beginnings of finding joy again in the song ‘Somewhere New.’
Having worked with Chiara to produce tour posters and event invitations for a previous release we were asked to design the CD cover as well as the double-sided A3 poster/lyric sheet insert for ‘Seamonster’.
After consultation with Chiara, we settled for a fully illustrative approach to the CD project as this would give us more freedom to express the emotion of the songwriting and present a more ‘human’ feel to the project rather than something traditionally CGI based.

Creatively, the seamonster theme opened up so many possibilities for us and the creative juices were soon in full flow as we developed our approach. In our experience, illustration is a much underused tool, one that when used properly can have a really dramatic effect on the viewer.
nterestingly, the initial artwork created was full colour - deep, dark blues and very moody. However after discussion with Chiara we soon realised that the colour element needed to be pulled back - it needed to be stark and unforgiving - something living at the depths of your soul, ready to pull you down into the inky darkness of despair when you least expected it.
